There were many good stories shared in the book A Field Guide for the Hero’s Journey,
but one stood out more than the others.
That was the story called When the
Nazis Came, by Martin Niemoller. It
goes like this:
When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.
When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.
When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.
When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
I wasn’t a Jew.
When they came for me,
There was no one left to speak out.
This is a hard concept for the current world situation. There are so many causes to stand up for. So many people pleading for me to help. Join this cause, share that post, donate to
this charity, spend your time here. It becomes
overwhelming at times and it is easy to retreat to my own corner of the world,
close my eyes and ignore the world at large.
However, when I read this poem, I realized that I need to reconsider
some of my choices. When it really
matters am I willing to stand up for what is right? It is true that I can’t join every cause, but
do I join when I can and when it really matters?
I am ever grateful for the Holy Spirit of God to guide and
direct me. I put my trust in Him, and
through His Spirit, I have faith that I will know when the right time to stand
firm will be. I will know who to help,
and who to sacrifice for. I don’t know
how I would make these choices without that guidance.
It is so important to be reading this type of work. Works that make you think and consider what
would I have done? I am looking forward
to reading the rest of this book. The
stories are very thought provoking and I hope I continue to learn more about my
choices as I finish it.
