This week as I learned about he Formula from Jim Richie in Launching Leaders a few things took me off guard. I decided to evaluate myself on each step to see how well I've done so far, and what changes might need to me made in order to follow the formula more successfully.
Step 1: Get up early.
This step is a killer for me. I have struggled to get up early all of my life. It is often a goal that I am working on. Now that I have teenagers in the house I find that it is helpful to get up around 6:15 at the latest in order to help them have a successful day at school. Although this would usually qualify as getting up early, it is the bare minimum needed. I have contemplated getting up even earlier in order to have quiet time in the morning to straighten my room, read some scriptures or get some extra homework done before the craziness of getting 5 kids and a husband out the door ensues. I believe that getting up early is not just a time of the day, but implies that you are getting up early enough to have that personal time in the morning to start the day off with accomplishments.
Step 2: Work hard.
I have always been a hard worker. I try to keep a list of my goals and responsibilities so that I accomplish what I set out to do. I think that this came from two areas. The first is that it is just part of who I am. It is part of my personality that I was born with. I also had great examples in my parents of hard work. It was taught to me all through my growing up years.
Step 3: Get your education.
I think it is fair to say that I am adequately working on this step.
Step 4: Find your oil.
Being a mother was my oil. I knew thats what I wanted to be and I worked hard to do it well. However that oil will run dry in about 10 years. I know that I will always be a mother and that it will take hard work, but the day to day things will change a ton. I hope that this class will help me find my new oil. Something that I can look forward to that I will be good at.
Step 5: Make your mark.
I hope as my kids get older that I will be able to see my mark in their lives. I still have a lot of work to do with my younger children, but my oldest has less than a year at home before he will be tested out in the world. I know they each have their own choices to make, but I hope my mark will always help them be better. In the future I don't know what my mark will be. I don't think I can make it until I find my oil. So there again I hope this class helps me figure that out.
Step 6: Give Back
I have always tried to serve others when I could, but my hope is to someday be financially secure enough to help others in a more significant way. This is the part that I am most excited about. Service can change people's lives forever. Even the small acts. I believe my heart is in the right place here.
As I work on these steps I believe that I can be successful. That my life will continue to hold meaning as I turn my focus outside of the walls of my own home.
