I learned a lot about myself this week while reading the
article Little Things are Important by
Elder Joseph B. Worthlin. When Worthlin said
“Do you take the time to
remember some of the simple courtesies that are so important in relationships
with others? Do you remember the smile, the compliment, the positive comment,
and the word of encouragement? We should do these important little things
without hesitation.” I have been
striving lately to be a better friend. I
have noticed that I don’t always do these simple things and I want to improve
on them. I was also impressed with this
talk when he said “We should try to live every day with absolute faith, for we
have learned in life that the Lord keeps his promises and watches over those
who trust Him. He has been so good to all of us that we should have a strong
belief that He must really love us in spite of our faults.” This statement stood out to me as I considered
the current challenges that president Nelson asked of the sisters of the
church. Doing these challenges, that to
some might seem like a little thing, to me seemed overwhelming. But I want to follow Worthlin’s advice to
fully trust in the Lord.
I found another valuable
lesson in the beginning of How Will You
Measure Your Life by Clayton M. Christensen. When he shared the experience of not giving
in when he was sharing his presentation.
Despite consistent opposition he insisted that he needed to present the
information in the right way in order to actually teach the lesson instead of
just telling what to do. I have felt
that pressure and unfortunately, I have given in to it on multiple occasions. I want to be more determined to first, know
the importance of what I am saying, and second, stay the course when sharing
the important information. I believe
that this will help me be a more effective leader at home, in my church
callings and in the business world.
